La infografia 3D es el proceso de convertir modelos triidimesionales en imágenes con efectos foto realisticos en un ordenador.
El modelado en la infografia 3D es una descripción de objetos en 3 dimensiones que puede contener geometría, punto de vista, textura, luces, niveles de oscuridad.
La infografia 3D es el proceso final de crear una imagen en 2D o animación desde una escena preparada en cualquier software de modelado en 3 dimensiones. Esto puede ser comparado a tomar una fotografia o filmar una pelicula despues de configurar todo como en la vida real. Muy diferentes, y suficientemente especializados son los métodos de modelado en infografia 3D que han sido desarrollados. Hay un rango muy amplio de infografia 3D, las tecnicas mas avanzadas en infografia 3D son: ray tracing (traza de rayos luminosos), radiosity (radiosidad).
La radiosidad en las infografias 3D tambien es conocida como iluminación global, es un método el cual intenta simular la forma en la cual la superficie directamente iluminada actúa como fuentes de luz indirecta que ilumina otras superficies. Esto en las infografias 3D produce mas realismo en los degradados que efectua la luz sobre los objetos y da una mejor sensación de ambiente a la escena de la infografia 3D.
La infografia 3D puede tomar desde segundos hasta dias en completar una imagen. En general dependiendo de la calidad final de la infografia 3D se usará un método si se quiere más realismo, calidad fotografia, o rapidez de la entrega del trabajo.
EL modelo de reflexiones y niveles de oscuridad son usados para describir la apariencia de la superficie en la infografia 3D: reflexiones: es la relación entre la iluminación de entrada y salida a un punto dado y muestra como la luz interactua con la superficie en las infografias 3D. niveles de oscuridad: como las propiedades de los materiales varias a traves de la superficie.
La infografia 3D es usada en arquitectura, videojuegos, simuladores, peliculas y televisión para efectos especiales por ejemplo. visualización de diseños, y cada empleo contiene diferentes caracteristicas y tecnicas de infografia 3D.
